BMW X3 RECONDITIONED ENGINE

BMW X3 RECONDITIONED ENGINE

We recently reconditioned an engine for a 2018 G02 BMW X3 3.0D B57D30A. The vehicle came to us with a seized engine and could not be turned by hand. After removing the engine, the ancillaries and stripping the engine down we found a spun bearing on main number 1. Despite a large redesign from BMW it seems, from our experience, the newer generation engines suffer from similar failures to the previous platforms.

The redesign of the B57 engine includes various additions of emission control systems and a different layout for the cooling system. Many of the changes focus on emission control and updates to existing systems in order to accommodate these. Engine internals have had a minor improvement. The design of the camshaft sprockets, rocker arms, pistons, engine block, cylinder head and rocker cover have been updated.

Parts for these engines are readily available and original reconditioning of these engines is something we can carry out here without issue. Reconditioned engines are always supplied with a 1 year warranty

After the spun bearing had been found and the reason the engine seized identified, we began the process of rebuilding this unit with new parts. Firstly we sent the engine block to the engineers for them to carry out line boring, thus repairing the damage caused by the spun bearing. With the engine block returned to factory spec we could continue with the build.

We carefully installed a new crankshaft with main bearings into the block after installing the oil jets. 6 new pistons and conrods were installed along with a new set of bearings and piston rings. The lower timing assembly and oil pump is built up with new parts along with the front and rear seals and sump. The cylinder head is installed with a new head gasket. New rocker arms are installed with hydraulic tappets. Camshafts and the carrier were installed and the upper timing assembled. Finally the rocker cover was installed with a new gasket to make the bare engine assembly.

After this process the ancillaries needed to be reattached to the engine so this could then be refitted to the vehicle. Once back in the car a new oil filter was installed and new oil & coolant were added. Once the vehicle was completely reassembled this was tested to ensure a successful rebuild.
